Cobra Stitch

Materials:
Core Strands
- 2 pieces of gimp each 6 inches longer than desired length of finished item.
Working Strands
- 2 pieces of gimp each 6 times longer than desired length of finished item.
Note: 3 feet of gimp working strands make 6 inches of cobra stitch.
Note: 6 feet of gimp working strands make 1 foot of cobra stitch.
Directions:
1. Choose 2 strands of gimp for core strands (these will not be seen in the final item). Choose 2 strands of gimp for the working strands. Tie strands together at one end. Hand knot on nail, cup hook or suction cup hook (Fig. A). If desired, cut 2 strands of gimp each 6 inches longer than desired finished length (core length) PLUS 6 times length (working length). Fold strands at core length over small end of snap hook.(Fig. B).
2. Arrange strips as in Fig. A or Fig. B. Number working strands 1 and 2. Center core strands are not worked and do not need numbers. Make loop, then turn strand 1 over core strands toward right. Turn strand 2 over end of strand 1, behind core strands and through loop of strand 1. Pull strands taut around core.
3. Make loop, then turn strand 1 back over core strands towards left. Turn strand 2 over end of strand 1 behind core strands and through loop of strand 1 (Fig. C). Pull strands taut.
4. Repeat step 2 and 3 as in Fig. D and Fig. E until desired length is braided 9 (Fig. F).
5. To fasten off, tie simple overhand knot to secure ends.
